A backup is not a disaster recovery plan

A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a plan. What to check before you need it.

A backup is not a disaster recovery plan

Backups copy data, recovery gets you working

A backup copies files somewhere else. Recovery puts the business back to work: files, email, applications, and the order they need to come back in so people can keep serving customers.

What to check

  • Where the copies live — not the same building or the same account
  • How often backups run and how long they are kept
  • Whether a staff member can restore a single file without waiting on a technician
  • When recovery was last tested, and what the result was

Test before you need it

Pick one file and one whole system and restore them. Record how long it took. That number is your real recovery time, and it is the one to quote when something goes wrong.
